1. Reducing pollution and protecting marine environment – SDG 14 & SDG 15

Opening by the chair Olli-Pekka Mäki, Environment Protection Director at City of Turku: how the Baltic Sea Challenge is enhancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 15.

  • Dr. Elina Virtanen, Finnish Environment Institute. Marine biodiversity hotspots – how to locate and take them into account in spatial planning?
  • Project manager Anna Saarentaus, John Nurminen Foundation. Gypsum – An effective water protection method for agriculture.
  • Dr. Piia Leskinen, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Tracking of sources of hazardous substances into wastewater and development of reduction measures.
  • Researcher (PhD) Riikka Puntila-Dodd, Finnish Environment Institute. MAAMERI project investigates how the ecosystem of the Archipelago Sea reacts to changes in the phosphorus load.

  • Research professor, Markku Viitasalo, Finnish Environment Institute. Reaching for “30 by 30” – How can cities, enterprises, and private citizens contribute to the conservation goals of the Baltic Sea?
  • Communications Director Tuula Putkinen, John Nurminen Foundation. Itämeripäivä/Baltic Sea Day – celebrating the Baltic Sea together every August – next 26.8.2021
  • Chairman Dmitry Filippenko, Green Planet. Public contribution to solutions for clean Baltic
  • Project manager Hanna Haaksi, Keep the Archipelago Tidy. The wide work our organization has done as a whole for the well-being of the marine environment for the past 50 years. Special emphasis can be put on marine litter and Clean Beach-campaign.
